But what exactly is gutter oil? According to Wikipedia,
Gutter oil is a term used in China, both Mainland and Taiwan, to describe illicit cooking oil which has been recycled from waste oil collected from sources such as restaurant fryers, sewer drains, grease traps and slaughterhouse waste.Thus, making vendors likely to switch and use gutter oil as substitute to save some bucks since it is way cheaper compared to commercial grade cooking oil.
The recycling is said undergoes a process of purification where it is processed with other animal fat through filtration or boiling. It can be hard to distinguish even when compared with clean oil since it looks and tastes alike.
